Mounds Trail

The Mounds Trail is a one-mile long, unpaved trail that offers visitors the opportunity to explore a diverse natural habitat, which includes salt marshes, tidal flats, brackish impoundments, cabbage palm hammocks, and pinelands. The trail is also great for bird watching and nature viewing. An abundance of large trees also provide ample shade for a brisk and breezy stroll through nature. An observation deck is located along the trail just after the fire tower overlooking a tidal marsh where egrets, herons and wood storks are often spotted.

Featured Uses: Running/walking, hiking, wildlife viewing and birding. Leashed dogs are permitted.

Access: To access the trailhead, head south from US 98 at Newport into the refuge on Lighthouse Rd. The trailhead is 6 miles south of the visitor center on the left.

Amenities: Parking, restrooms and observation deck.
