Fort Gadsden Historic Site

Forest Road 129-B
Eastpoint FL 32328
(850) 643-2282

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this is the site of two forts – a British fort built during the War of 1812 for recruiting Indians and blacks fleeing slavery, then a later installation built by Andrew Jackson. The British abandoned a fully supplied fort, leaving it in the hands of former slaves and it became known as the Negro Fort. The forts played major roles in the First Seminole War and later in the Civil War. Both are located in the wilderness of the Apalachicola National Forest.

Send this to someone who needs a peaceful day outside.
Paddle the Wacissa River and see why it’s a local favorite! The calm current and wide channels make it ideal for beginners, families, or anyone who just needs a slow day on the water. Bring a picnic and let the river set the pace for the afternoon.

Keep an eye out for turtles, birds, and other wildlife along the way! 🐢
