May
Emancipation Day
-
When: May 20, 2026

Where: Knott House Museum
-
The Experience: For indoor activities in Tallahassee on May 20, join us for Emancipation Day. We celebrate freedom with a weeklong festival in Florida’s Capital City. Back in April 1865, people could not share news of an event worldwide in just seconds like we can today. It took more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation for the news to reach Tallahassee, on May 20, 1865. Almost a month later, someone delivered the news to Texas on June 19, which we now know as Juneteenth. Every year, on May 20, the Knott House Museum and the John G. Riley Museum host a celebration. This event takes place on the steps of the Knott House Museum. It includes performances, speakers, and a reenactment. The reenactment shows Union General McCook reading the Emancipation Proclamation.
