Fern Trail

Ideal for single-track enthusiasts and cross-country runners, the Fern Trail is located just minutes from some of Tallahasseeās most urban areas. The trail runs from the centrally located Governorās Park, and continues throughout the east side of Tallahassee; however, portions of this trail are on private property. The trail crosses behind several major roads and dips under Capital Circle via the railroad tracks, making it a widely used commuter trail that appeals to those seeking off-road adventure.
Throughout most of its roughly 3-mile length, the Fern Trail is shaded and the path is a relatively smooth single-track, except for some thicker roots and the occasional dropped branches. It is easily accessed from many points, the most popular of which is near Governorās Square Mall in the Governorās Square Park between Apalachee Parkway and Park Avenue. Another popular access point is through Tom Brown Park, which sits on an expansive 225-acres, and offers plenty of parking space, dozens of family-friendly outdoor activities and additional trail routes to choose from, like the Goose Pond Trail or Lake Leon Shared-Use Path.
Approaching the Fern Trail is the Kohlās Trail near the Governorās Square Mall, where youāll wind through beautiful urban woods and climb several small hills as you follow the path (which is marked with blue blazes on the trees) for about a mile before crossing Victory Garden Drive near the Polos on Park apartment complex. From there, you can follow a stream toward the railroad tracks or diverge into the woods for a more adventurous trip. This is a fun diversion, but one to avoid if there has been abundant rain. Either way, the trail will then wind behind multiple businesses as it makes its way toward Capital Circle NE and Tom Brown Park that lies just beyond.
Featured Uses: Hiking, trail running, cross-country running, and mountain biking. Leashed dogs are permitted on the trail and off-leash dogs can use the nearby fenced dog park.
