No Borders: Richard Bickel

Richard Bickel is an award‑winning American photographer and photojournalist whose career spans more than 70 countries and includes features in many of the world’s leading publications. Drawn to the rhythms of life along great rivers—from Africa’s Niger to Burma’s Irrawaddy—Bickel found a deep and lasting connection in Apalachicola, Florida, where he settled in 1994. For three decades, he has documented the culture, character, and working traditions of the Gulf Coast, discovering in its working waterfront, resilient people, and enduring heritage the same spirit that animated the communities he photographed abroad.

Bickel’s work in Apalachicola is matched by his long‑standing commitment to documenting the everyday lives of Cubans and their ongoing fight for survival. Across borders and cultures, he seeks out the universal threads of joy, survival, perseverance, and human dignity.

In No Borders, Bickel brings these worlds together. This exhibition explores the shared depths and striking similarities among the people of Apalachicola, Cuba, and communities across the globe. He is the author of the best‑selling photo books The Last Great Bay and Apalachicola, An American Treasure, both considered definitive visual portraits of the region. Bickel’s honors include a 2023 Emmy Award, the Golden Quill for photography, and the New York Art Directors Club Award. His work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States.
