This exhibition highlights African Americans in Leon County who served during the Civil War and the significance of the Emancipation Proclamation and May 20th, Florida’s Emancipation date. We explore Tallahassee during the Reconstruction Era and debate the effects of its dismantling. This exhibit also spotlights the rise of the Black professional class and the origins of some of Tallahassee’s oldest Black neighborhoods.
