Elisabeth “Pansy” Ireland Poe was was a pioneer for women in the sport of polo. As a young woman in her 20s, Pansy registered under her initials with the United States Polo Association and played on men’s teams. At the time, women were not allowed membership in the USPA and when her ruse was discovered, she was unceremoniously stripped of her USPA membership and her handicap. Women were denied membership until 1973. Pansy died in 1978.
(Visit the “Trailblazer for Women’s Polo” exhibit in the Elisabeth Ireland Poe Gallery at Pebble Hill to learn more about Pansy’s impact on the sport)
