City Offers Scores of Options for Exercise and Fitness
May is Exercise and Fitness Month in Tallahassee, as proclaimed by Mayor John Marks at the May 14 City Commission meeting, and staying active is easier than ever in our community! From exercise classes to public pools to organized sports activities, citizens have more options than ever.
Within the city limits, there are over 4,000 acres of parkland maintained by the City’s Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Affairs Department. These range from smaller passive parks perfect for a nice walk or a game of tag with the kids, to larger parks featuring a variety of active recreational options for patrons. There are also two dog parks to help both you and your animal stay social and fit. The City maintains and operates seven pools, each with different exercise options from open swim time to scheduled water aerobics classes. There are also 7 community centers with indoor/outdoor activities, two public golf courses, 55 tennis courts, two disc golf course, a skate park, a kayak/canoe paddle trail and over 30 miles of nature and fitness trails. A Summer Playground Program is also offered to help kids stay engaged and active during lazy summer days.
For people interested in team sports, adults can choose to play basketball, flag football, softball and volleyball. Children can participate in cheerleading, baseball, basketball, flag or tackle football, soccer, softball, track or girls’ volleyball.
Through the Trousdell Gymnastic Center, gymnastics is available for boy and girls of all ages and skill levels. Even adults and children with special needs can join in on the fun. The center also offers classes in cheer, a variety of dance styles and aerobics.
For seniors who wish to stay active, a variety of classes are offered at community recreation centers and the City’s Senior Center, including yoga, tai chi, general exercise and a variety of dance styles. Patrons can also play ping-pong and billiards, among other things. The Senior Center also offers a variety of health seminars and screenings in addition to its many activities.
These are just some of the ways the City of Tallahassee helps keep citizens active. Tallahasseeans are also fortunate to have ready access to lots of outdoor adventures and privately run indoor programs.
